With the Great Western Greenway in Mayo to the Kingfisher and Tour de Humbert Cycling Trail which runs through Leitrim, Cavan, Fermanagh, Longford and Mayo, the North West offers the cyclist a wide choice of exploration and personal challenge. The Humbert Route which starts at Kilcummin in North Mayo and follows the route taken in 1798 by the French forces of General Humbert. It leads all the way to the scene of his final defeat in Ballinamuck, Co. Longford.
The Green Heartlands Cycle Route is a cycling tour which takes you through 217km (135 miles) of the splendour of the South Roscommon countryside. Features include Lough Ree and the River Shannon. Further north the 'Great Western Greenway' has become a hugely popular route for cyclists to the West of Ireland. It is a 42km walking and cycling trail from Westport to Achill that mainly follows the line of a famous old railway which closed in 1937.For those of you who wish to fully embrace the cycling experience, why not take advantage of an all-in cycling package provided by a number of specialist cycling operators throughout the North West.
