Innishmurray Island

Innishmurray Island, which lies 6km off the coast of County Sligo at its nearest point, is an island containing the remains of an early Irish monastic settlement founded by St Molaise in 500 AD. Most of these remains lie within the cashel. According to the writings of de Cuellar, one of the few to escape the shipwreck of the Spanish Armada in 1588, there were still monks present on the island at that time. It is unclear when they finally left, but the island appears to have been continuously inhabited until the late 1940's, and it is possible to see the ruins of the 19th century houses all around the island, the altars, the maledictory or 'cursing stones' and the women's church and burial ground. The island is one of Sligo’s hidden gems for tourists to visit but due to its remoteness it can only be accessed by boat when weather permits.

Many local licensed charter boats and operators run day trips to and from Innishmurray.
