Séamus Mag Uidhir Commemorative Stone
The Séamus Mag Uidhir Commemorative Stone was unveiled in Doohoma, Co. Mayo on the 20th July 2019 as part of the Éigse Séamus Mag Uidhir festival to mark the 50th anniversary of the writers death.
Séamus Mag Uidhir was a well known writer from North West Mayo who wrote extensively in the Irish Language and recorded the folktales, myths and legends of the area in his writings. Born in Doohoma in 1902, Séamus grew up in a world of storytelling where myths, tales and superstitions were the norm and the Seanchaí storyteller was king. The Irish language was the language of the community.
Séamus’ first writings appeared in Béaloideas; later followed by a series of articles in the Irish Language newspaper, An tÉireannach. These were published weekly from June 1935 to February 1937 under the pen name Sliabh Chairn.
Séamus published four books, Dha Chrann na Marbh, An Marcach dubh, Idir Talamh agus Traigh and Fánaíocht I gCondae Mhuigheo.
Fánaíocht i gCondae Mhuigheo was first published in 1944 and rewritten in the Cló Romhánach and the Caighdeán Oifigiúil by Máire Ní Ící in 1994.
He continued his writings, publishing a weekly article in The Western People using the pen name Préachán Néifin from June 1964, submitting his final article in March 1969.
