Lissadell
Lissadell is a classical estate house dating from the the 1830s and distinguished more by its occupants over the years than by its architecture. The artic explorer, Henry-Gore-Booth was born here in 1843 and so were his remarkable daughters, Eva, the poet, and Constance (Countess Markievicz) the revolutionary Irish leader, who was elected first woman member of the British House of Commons in 1918, but took her seat in Dail Eireann (the Embryonic Irish Parliament) instead. The grounds are generally open to the public during the summer months, however the house is in private ownership therefore access this is not always garaunteed.
