Clones
Clones is a key agricultural area to the west of County Monaghan and close to border with County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. Clones has a rich history dating back to early Christian times. It was the site of a monastery founded by St Tighearnach circa 500AD. Today there are some remains of a later abbey in it's place along with a well-preserved round tower. In there centre of Clones there stands an ancient sculptured Celtic Cross stands in the centre of the town. Clones crochet lace which was once widely exported is still made in this area and a permanent exhibition at the The Diamond which also ehibits an early 9th century High Cross. The town was also made famous as the setting for Patrick McCabe's film 'The Butcher Boy' which was shot in the town.
