Murrisk is a popular village because of the presence of Croagh Patrick or "The Reek" - a Holy Pilgrimage Mountain beside Westport. On the last Sunday of July each year, thousands of Pilgrims climb this mountain, many in their bare feet, in memory of Ireland's Patron saint - Saint Patrick who, it is said, fasted and prayed for forty days and nights on top of this mountain.
