Jamestown

Jamestown is only 5 km from Carrick-On-Shannon. At Jamestown the Shannon bends to form a loop and turns northwards for a short distance before regaining its south-westerly direction at Drumsna. It is one of the most historic places in County Leitrim and it's name is associated with King James I of England. It was fortified to protect the settlers from England and Scotland to whom the land had been confiscated. One of the ancient gates from this period can still be viewed in the town.
