Mountnugent

Mountnugent is a quiet village located on the banks of River Inny and close to Lough Sheelin, probably the best wild brown trout fishery in Ireland. Angling permits are required to fish on Lough Sheelin and can be purchased from the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board website.

For those looking for a good equestrian experience, Ross House, which is set in 36 acres of private parkland on the shores of the lake and offers visitors a great opportunity to enjoy a horse-riding holiday in the area.

Historically, during the middle ages, Lough Sheelin was a border between the Anglo-Normans and the O'Reilly family. The remains of Crover Castle, which stands on an island on Lough Sheelin, date from this time. Nearby Crover House Hotel has been named after the castle and stands on the panoramic shores of Lough Sheelin.

Also worth a visit is the Carraig Craft Visitor Centre which has basketry museum with an exhibition of traditional baskets in rod, rush, and straw. An audio visual presentation, craft shop, and  coffee shop, is available at the centre.
