Killeshandra, is a angling centre with an international reputation. The town is close to near Lough Oughter and surrounded by water and is a popular place for watersports such as kayaking, wakeboarding and boating. The town host a high profile fishing festival annually in May.
There are some great walking trails in Killeshandra too. The Killeshandra Lake & Forest Walk loop (7km) starts and ends in the town. There are three other way-marked trails within a short drive of the town such as the looped walks in Swanlinbar (7km), Ballyconnell Canal Walk (6km) and the longer Cavan Way (26Km). Killeshandra is also famous for traditional Irish music and visitors can find an trad music sessions on Thursday and Saturday nights in the town.
Lough Oughter Castle is near Killeshandra and woth exploring. An impressive construction, the castle is located on an island in the middle of Lough Oughter. Built by the Anglo-Normans in the 13th century, it was then captured by the O'Reillys, the rulers of east Brifne. Owen Roe O'Neill, leader of the anti-English revolt of the 1640s, died here in November 1649.
