Cootehill

Cootehill is a vibrant town adjacent to the County Monaghan border in East Cavan. Nestled between two rivers (Rivers Dromore and Annalee), the town is very popular as a fishing destination and boasts 26 lakes within 13 km’s of the town.

Cootehill is a heritage town with a historical town trail. The Maudabawn Cultural Centre is open to visitors and also arranges guided tours of the area which provide detailed information about the local history, heritage and geology of the area. Outdoor adventure enthusiasts can go canoeing, gorge walking, abseiling, orienteering and hill walking at Tanagh Outdoor Adventure Centre, situated just outside Cootehill.

Attractions worth a visit in the wider area include the Patrick Kavanagh Centre in Inniskeen and Carrickmacross Lace in County Monaghan.

Cootehill has many artefacts providing evidence of ancient settlements in the area.  A Megalithic tomb at nearby Cohaw is a well-preserved example of a double chamber tomb, at least 4000 years old. Bellamont House, dating from 1725 is one of the finest Palladian houses in Ireland. It was designed by Edward Lovett Pearce, who was also the designer of the Bank of Ireland building on College Green in Dublin. Although Bellamont House is not open to the public, some parts of the grounds and paths are accessible.
