Belturbet
Belturbet is a busy town on the banks of the River Erne. It is a great place to explore the river and the and the Shannon-Erne Canal as cruising boats can be hired in Belturbet marina. Belturbet is also in the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark area which has plenty of activities available for young familes and lovers of the outdoors, archaeology and heritage.
Belturbet a very popular destination for anglers with the river and nearby lakelands providing a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the sport. There are lots of accomodation options in the town for visitors to spend time in the area along with a selection of good restaurants and pubs.A great way to explore the area is to rent a bike which is possible at Corleggy Farm. The local Belturbet 9 hole golf course on the outskirts of the town is also a great place to spend a morning or afternoon.
Turbet Island is a very popular attraction in the town. Turbet Island was probably one of the first major settlements in Belturbet. The motte-and-bailey was abandoned by the Anglo-Normans before 1233, and it taken over by the O'Reillys who are believed to have constructed a stone castle on the site. Turbet Island can be accessed by a footbridge beside the main bridge over the Erne in the town.
